Vathy (Samos Town)
Vathy or Vathi (also known as Samos Town) is the capital of the island and also the largest city on Samos with about 6000 inhabitants. From here you have a great starting point if you want to explore the island by hiking and day trips. According to Greek mythology, it was at Samos that the goddess Hera was born. Locals honored her by building a temple (actually one of Greece’s biggest). Today, only one of the original 133 columns remain. During 1992, both Heraion and Pythagorio was included on the UNESCO World Heritage List.
Samos most beautiful beach is called Lamonakia Beach and is located near Kokkari. Here, there’s everything you need for a lovely day at the beach, and there’s also plenty of space for all visitors. This tunnel is considered to be one of the main buildings of ancient Greece and goes about 1000 meters into the mountain Kastri. The tunnel was built on the orders of Polycrates who wated to supply the city with water 500 BC.
